Guyana’s maritime sector has taken a significant step forward with the commissioning of the motor tug “Arau,” a state-of-the-art vessel valued at $790 million. This addition is expected to enhance the country’s ability to manage vessel traffic and ensure greater efficiency within its waterways.

About the Arau

The Arau was designed and constructed by Damen Shipyards, a leading Dutch shipbuilder, and delivered in June 2025. The vessel was officially commissioned in July during a ceremony led by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. Juan Edghill.

With its advanced specifications, the tugboat is equipped to perform a range of essential functions, including:

  • Towing and Maneuvering Services

  • Pilotage Assistance

  • Barge Handling and Survey Operations

The commissioning of Arau underscores the government’s commitment to developing a modern, well-equipped maritime sector capable of meeting international standards.

Building a Stronger Maritime Framework

Minister Edghill, in his address, highlighted that the introduction of the Arau represents a major improvement in the capabilities of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD).

“Guyana’s maritime sector has moved from broken-down boats to a facility that will be able to meet international standards… creating an environment to ensure standards are in place and upheld,” he said.

He further noted that this development is part of a broader modernization effort, which includes both infrastructure upgrades and legislative reforms to support long-term sustainability.

Part of a Broader Modernization Plan

The Arau is the second new vessel acquired by MARAD since 2020, following the introduction of the pilot boat “Arapaima” in 2023. Plans are already in motion for the delivery of three additional vessels before the end of 2025, which will further enhance Guyana’s maritime capacity.
